The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is an executive agency within the Department for Transport (DfT). DVLA was established in 1972 to aid road safety and general law enforcement by maintaining central accurate registers of drivers and vehicles; and collecting Vehicle Excise Duty (VED).
